HISTORY
A proving ground for artists
Stereo One was part of Jamaica’s competitive 1980s sound-system culture. Contemporary reporting associated Clifton Henry’s Stereo One with Grant's Pen Road, St. Andrew. Many artists connected to the sound came from Spanish Town, but an artist’s hometown or a dance location should not be mistaken for the sound’s base.
Lt. Stitchie’s Stereo One years are central to his rise, but the crew was much broader. Stitchie later recalled Ricky Stereo, Jonathan Wolfman, Daddy Blue, Captain Barkey, Wickerman, Courtney Melody, Mumble, Mikey Dread, Leroy the Hornsman, Dolly Man, Sugar Bobby and Bendilou among the crew. Surviving tapes add combinations including Malibu and other guests. Clifton Henry is documented as founder/operator and producer; Stitchie later described himself as an important creative force in developing the Stereo One name and label, while describing Henry as the executive-production and financial figure.
